Movie Boosts Nashville’s Parthenon Visits

It took a dreamy demigod to catapult Nashville’s Parthenon past oh-look-a-building status for countless adolescents.

Paid attendance at the landmark jumped to 15,413 in March from about 10,000 the same month last year. Parks department workers attribute the difference to Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief, a movie about the adventures of Poseidon’s earthly son.

A film crew shot at the Parthenon for three days in August, facilities manager Lauren Bufferd said. After the movie’s February opening, parks employees fielded so many questions about it that the department distributed a question-and-answer sheet.

There’s a scene in the movie where someone says, ‘Who would have thought there was a full- scale replica of the Parthenon in Nashville?’” Bufferd said. “I turned to my husband and said, ‘Our numbers are going up.’ ”

Parthenon not in books

The Lightning Thief is about a quest for Zeus’ bolt, and a celestial scavenger hunt takes the star and his friends to the Parthenon’s Athena statue. It’s based on a series of books that use Greek mythology as a backdrop for teen adventures.

Ward Fleissner, a humanities teacher at Chattanooga’s Baylor School, said the school quit assigning Percy Jackson books as summer reading because so many students read them on their own. Many of his sixth-graders saw the movie on its opening weekend, before a planned school trip to the Parthenon in early April, and gave it mixed reviews.

“It’s the same way with every single movie,” student John Carlson said. . “If there’s a book, it’s going to be better.”

Trouble is, the Parthenon isn’t mentioned in the book series, leaving some Tennessee fans conflicted about seeing it in the movie.

“If I’d known it was going to be in the movie, I would have taken a million pictures,” said Baylor University student Keyonna Phinizey, a book series fan who visited the landmark last year.

For those who missed the Parthenon’s close-up, The Lightning Thief is scheduled for a June release on DVD and Blu-Ray June 22.

Percy Jackson Goofs

I was on IMDB looking at the goofs for Percy Jackson. There was only five goofs listed. Did you catch any mistakes other than the ones listed below? Add a comment if you saw any others.

Revealing mistakes: When Percy, Annabeth and Grover come to Luke to ask for help he is playing Call of Duty with a Playstation 3 controller while on screen Xbox 360 buttons are seen.

Revealing mistakes: In the scene in Auntie Em’s. Where Annabeth first runs into Medusa, she is wearing a turban. According to lore, Medusa has a head full of snakes, rather than hair. In that scene there is a small piece of blonde hair visible peeking out of the right side of the turban. Uma Thurman has blonde hair.

Revealing mistakes: When Medusa first notices Percy she puts her glasses on the crazy lady’s statue but when they are later seen with the head she has glasses on.

Continuity: After Percy enters the Lotus Casino in Vegas, the designs on his blue shirt are suddenly gone.

Continuity: Pigeons outside the window of Percy’s house disappear and reappear between shots.

Rick Riordan Doesn’t Plan to See the Movie

Rick Riordan, the author the bestselling “Percy Jackson & the Olympians” series of books for young readers, paid a visit on Sunday to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City to discuss some of his classical inspirations.

The first book in his series, “Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief,” tells the story of a troubled young boy with ADHD and dyslexia who discovers that the Greek gods are real, and that he’s actually the son of a mortal woman and Poseidon, god of the sea.

Riordan kicked off his talk at the Met’s Grace Rainey Rogers Auditorium by apologizing for the rainy weather outside. “Thanks for braving Zeus’s storm!” he told the audience, which was largely made up of young children and parents.

During the presentation, Riordan said he planned to launch a new “Camp Half Blood” series in the Fall of 2010, most likely in October, though the final details haven’t been set. In his books, Camp Half Blood is a special area that shelters and trains the children of gods and mortals.

He also talked about his coming book “The Kane Chronicles, Book One: The Red Pyramid.” The new series draws on the myths of Egypt, and is due out May 4.

“I was fascinated by how magic works in Egypt,” Riordan told Speakeasy in an interview after the event. He said he was intrigued by the section in the Bible in which Moses confronts Egyptian magicians. “I wanted to explore the Egyptian idea of magic,” he said.

Recently, a big-screen adaptation of “The Lightning Thief” was released into theaters. Riordan said he hasn’t seen the film and doesn’t plan to. “Books and movies are so different,” he said. He said he wanted to keep his own images of his characters in his head and didn’t want them to be replaced by someone else’s interpretation.

Percy Jackson Getting Wet?

So, I went on www.foxinternational.com/percyjackson today and suddenly it hit me as I stared at the background. Percy Jackson is wet!!!! He has to will himself to get wet, but why would he be wanting to get wet when he’s making all the water? This is a crime and I think I’ll cry if he’s getting wet like this in the movie. Maybe I’m missing something. Maybe I’m overreacting.

Will the adventure be like The Race to Witch Mountain or a winding tale like The Fellowship of the Ring?

The Race to Witch Mountain is pretty fast pace; I’m hoping The Lightening Thief will be even faster. The book movies pretty fast which made me like the books in the first place. Yes, The Fellowship of the Ring is AWESOME, but the tale is very winding with slow parts and then fighting scenes. I hope The Lightening Thief will not be like this as movies always keep my attention when all the scenes are fast pace and blend well together.

Is Percy Jackson the next Harry Potter?

Percy Jackson and Harry Potter have the same type of themes. Same type of characters. Percy and Harry are the heroes that grew up not knowing what they really were. They both attend places mostly unknown to humans. They both are important people. Annabeth and Hermione are the brains of the trio. Grover and Ron are the best friends and are always making jokes. They all have crazy adventures and at school/camp they go back to the regular world.

The people in all the Harry Potter movies were casted pretty well. The trio all look like their book characters. Unfortunately, the trio in Percy Jackson does not. They are not the correct age. Annabeth and Grover do not look like their book characters.

The Harry Potter movies do okay to sticking to the storyline. In the Sorcerer’s Stone it stays along the line, but no movie (that I know of) could get as close to the books as Twilight. Already Percy Jackson looks to have strayed with changing Annabeth and Grover. Also Riptide appears to be a click pen on the trailer rather than one with a cap. The opening scene in this trailer never happens in the book. I hope they cut it out of the movie as I don’t like them giving you that hint as to who is father is. Medusa is supposed to be an old grandma and on the trailer Medusa (Uma Thurman) doesn’t at all look old. In the scene shown with Medusa Percy is holding a PHONE! Demigods don’t use phones as they are like beacons. As it is an iPhone, let’s hope it’s just Grover’s cell phone. I’m glad Chris Columbus is directing as he did keep the two Harry Potter movies close to the books.

I’m really hoping The Lightening Thief will be a great movie even if it isn’t close to the books.
