Here Part 2 of our group commentary of the second trailer by Kitkatgirl200, LivelySparrow97, and Rebecca King. At the end, we would love to hear your opinion. If you wanted to, you could open up a word or notepad and take notes on your thoughts as you read the commentary. The picture numbers refer to the pictures from the trailer screen capture page. Let’s dive in…
LivelySparrow97: Whose grandmother? A monster perhaps?
Kitkatgirl200: I’d just like to point out that Grover isn’t there, so I assume this mean he is kidnapped some time between this and the cab ride of doom.
LivelySparrow97: Excellent deduction Watson.
Rebecca: I agree. I think how it will play out is somewhere in between the cab scene and here is when Grover disappears. After he is taken, they go to seek Hermes’ advice.
Kitkatgirl200: On a side note, I’m really excited to see all the Hermes stuff. Who’s with me? (I wonder if they’ll cut George and Martha)
Rebecca: I am! I’m really curious to find out what all he gives them and the shield we see him standing by in one of the offical stills.
LivelySparrow97: I am as well!
LivelySparrow97: That is perhaps the coolest godly thing we’ve seen from the films.
Kitkatgirl200: Hermes working for/being in charge of UPS is the best thing ever. Also, that shot with the door is awesome.
Rebecca: Where I live we don’t have mailboxes so all my mail goes to the UPS Store. I always wondered why I couldn’t go into the backroom…
LivelySparrow97: Summon the kraken!! Sorry….wrong film franchise. This looks like a fun scene that I’m looking forward to. Tyson is in cyclops mode too.
Kitkatgirl200: So if I remember correctly, they have to get past the sea monsters in the book. This appears to have them falling into it. I also wonder if they’ll be separated from Tyson in the movie.
Rebecca: I would be nice to see him disappear (sorry, Tyson) that way we can see some Percabeth! I’m hoping they keep the Siren scene or at least something close!!
Kitkatgirl200: It would also be a good way to show how much Percy cares for his brother, not thinking on the shallow end of things. (Also, YES TO THE SIREN SCENE)
Rebecca: lol, that too.
LivelySparrow97: The Siren scene would really give some needed characterization to Annabeth.
Rebecca: In the book we learned a lot more about Annabeth from the Siren scene. Especially how she cares about Luke.
Kitkatgirl200: It is a very important moment for her. We’ll hope we get something of the sort.
Rebecca: It’s Rainbow!! Rainbow is a perfect and cool way to show how innocent Tyson is and how he’s not a evil Cyclops!
Kitkatgirl200: I have nothing intelligent to say.
LivelySparrow97: Rainbow looks awesome, though to be honest, for some odd reason I imagined hippocampi to look like hippos/manatees.
KitKatgirl200: It looks like a colorful sea unicorn.
LivelySparrow97: I love that quote. Its so touching.
Kitkatgirl200: So when I saw this part of the trailer I sorta squealed and jumped inside because they’re reading the book! And trying to keep the themes intact! It’s also a really nice quote, and in a way it’s something that everyone in the series needs to learn.
LivelySparrow97: This is also evidence that the director actually read the book!!
Rebecca: This is one of the most powerful quotes in the book. The fact that it is in the movie is awesome! There is so much in this trailer of proof that more time was spent to make this movie great not only for fans but for everyone!
Kitkatgirl200: Hug! (Me yelling the obvious, I have a bad habit of doing that.)
LivelySparrow97: Any guesses as to when this takes place?
Rebecca: In a scene that plays later in the trailer, we see Percy having a water fight with the guys on the one ship. I think they get separated and they could be reuniting here after Clarisse’s help.
Kitkatgirl200: I agree with Rebecca. It appears that they will cut the Hydra, so it would make sense for Clarisse to save them from Luke. Maybe they’ll be thrown overboard.
LivelySparrow97: I agree with you Kit, I think Clarisse will save them from Luke somehow.
Rebecca: Flashback! I am looking forward to seeing the flashback! Thalia’s clothes perfectly match her!
LivelySparrow97: Thor Fruedenthal has really impressed me with his artistic vision for the series. The layout of this scene seems dripping with aesthetic taste. The tiny flowers add hints of subtle beauty to this otherwise dark and depressing scene. Bravo!
Kitkatgirl200: It’s nice to see the story board he shared earlier come to life. Woah big word Louis. It looks sorta grainy, is she like turning into dirt? I’m so eloquent compared to you guys.
Rebecca: I’m not too bummed they put the Manticore into this movie. It looks like a very cool scene!! Percy fight him!
LivelySparrow97: To be honest, I’d rather see Annabeth fight it.
Kitkatgirl200: I just hope, if it is Dr. Thorn, that they don’t make him a growling, dumb monster and make him cunning.
LivelySparrow97: I have a theory. I think we’ll just get to see the manticore in manticore form. In the next movie, we’ll meet Dr.Thorn, who, to our surprise, is the manticore. I’ll probably be wrong, but that’s my guess.
Kitkatgirl200: I Have a theory that Annabeth will go missing/be taken hostage at the end of this film, not at the beginning of the next.
LivelySparrow97: I like it Kit! That can go hand-in-hand with my theory!
Rebecca: It would add a very dramatic ending!
Kitkatgirl200: Especially if they make Percy think she’s dead…(that way seeing the Manticore in the next one would sorta set whatever into motion.)
LivelySparrow97: My bet is that shortly after this, Clarisse comes to the rescue. I don’t know how they’ll escape the manticore though.
Kitkatgirl200: (Insert funny commentary here) (Doesn’t Tyson’s hair look fabulous? Totally in-style at the moment) (And now it’s not.) (Doesn’t that Manticore look even more fabulous with that hair dye right from Circe’s island spa resort gift shop!?)
Rebecca: Monster? God? Titan? Reminds me of the beast from Doctor Who.
LivelySparrow97: This scene is no doubt the talk of the town.
Kitaktgirl200: Is it? I’m confused. What is this?
LivelySparrow97: The question is, who is it? I’m guessing Kronos, because I have a few theories to back it up. I’m going to guess this happens after the scene in screencap 77 happens. This could be a dream sequence, as in after Thalia opens the coffin. Or, it could be after the Fleece is placed on the coffin, resurrecting Kronos. Kronos, in turn, wreaks havoc while displaying his power that will one day be bottled up in Luke. I have no idea what would happen after that though. I’m also going to assume that this…beast/titan/monster…is the thing that was in the official poster. Note the reddish crackling skin and the golden eyes. Speaking of golden eyes, I believe that is one of Kronos’ trademarks.
Kitkatgirl200: Interesting deduction, Sherlock. At first when I saw this, I thought it was a redesigned version of the cyclops whose name I can’t remember. But he/she/it does have two eyes. No idea really, all I know is that I think it’s creepy. And apparently crumbling in the last picture? What? ISN’T IT CRUMBLING?
Rebecca: Definitely crumbling. Also, at 1:54 minutes into the trailer, we see what looks to be the coffin explode. Could Kronos be escaping, but then he’s too weak to form thus he has to go into Luke? Like Kit pointed out, he is definitely crumbling.
Kitkatgirl200: Awful theory time: What if they use the fleece to bring back Kronos but he isn’t like strong enough to hold his own form (and needs a host) so he crumbles back into Tartarus?
Rebecca: Could be. Percy fights him and somewhat destroys him.
Kitkatgirl200: I don’t like the idea of Percy fighting him and actually winning.
Rebecca: And what if this aura type thingy that comes over Riptide at the beginning of the trailer helps him fight Kronos?
LivelySparrow97: I hope not, I agree with Kit when I say I don’t want Percy to fight and win against Kronos like this. But it is a possibility, nonetheless.
Kitkatgirl200: Possibly. I just don’t want him to win, it was sorta something I always liked about the books. It’s like Percy beating Luke in the first movie. In the book, Percy never beat Luke alone, or Kronos.
Rebecca: I know. I agree.
Rebecca: I really cannot wait to see Percy have a water fight! I always loved when he controlled the water in the book, but to visually see it will be even better!
LivelySparrow97: This will no doubt be a fun scene.
Rebecca: Also, the gun… These look like good old regular henchmen rather than demigods. If they are demigods then will the gun be shooting Celestial Bronze bullets? A gun in the books isn’t unheard of so it is possible.
Kitkatgirl200: I have nothing interesting to say about this one.
Picture 87 (Tyson looks on in horror as The Lightning Thief movie is projected onto the side of Princess Andromeda)
Kitkatgirl200: The title is my only contribution to this still.
LivelySparrow97: LOL at Tyson’s face. He just captured the look of every PJO fan when we saw the first movie. “How DARE they forget Kronos, Clarisse, Mr.D, Nancy B., Annabeth’s blonde hair, etc.”
Rebecca: I’m with you, Louis!
Kitkatgirl200: This scene was gorgeous. Oh that sounded snobby! It is though, like I said before, loving the cinematography. Also, we get to see Riptide change from pen to sword! Whatever problems I had with it being a click-y pen are now gone.
Rebecca: I really love how Riptide goes through the bull! I’m also expecting that it will show Riptide returning to his pocket.
LivelySparrow97: The CGI is top-notch and the scene itself is pretty wicked. It is a tad spoilerific though, no one will be guessing how that bull dies.
Kitkatgirl200: Louis, I think you mean ‘explodes.’ Tyson destroys the bulls in the book, doesn’t he? Personally I think this is much cooler. I guess it is a spoiler though. But who are we kidding, I think the whole exploding coffin debacle is a lot more spoilery. Bull’s aren’t really their top priority to keep under wraps.
LivelySparrow97: Good point Kit.
Rebecca: I can’t imagine this isn’t going to one of those scenes that everything is thrown at the camera screen for some 3D magic!
Kitkatgirl200: And by magic you mean making me flinch, right?
LivelySparrow97: As long as the scene isn’t setup for the sole purpose of 3D effects, then it will be awesome!
Rebecca: I personally hate 3D. If there are a few scenes like this, it won’t bug me.
Kitkatgirl200: If it’s good 3D, like The Hobbit, I won’t mind. Doesn’t look like it will be though, I think I’ll watch it with my good ol’ buddy 2D.
LivelySparrow97: My preference is 2D as well. Sometimes 3D comes off as a cheesy money scheme.
Kitkatgirl200: We’re all 3D…I can’t think of the word at the moment. It’s like pacifist, only instead of against violence, we’re against new things. If you find this word, please return it to my head. I don’t know the address, figure it out yourself.
Kitkatgirl200: Overall, I’m really excited for this movie, which means the trailer did it’s job well. There are definitely some changes, but they seem to be made in the spirit of the books, unlike the first movie, which threw it’s source material out both a metaphorical and literal window. As long as it stays respectful to the book, I’m looking forward to seeing it play out. That’s the great thing about (good) book adaptations, you get to re-experience a story through someone elses eyes. I’m still hoping for the siren scene, though! (And a whole lot of other things to fangirl about.)
LivelySparrow97: This trailer really shows an effort to please fans while appealing to broader audiences. The new director has taken a more artistic approach giving the film a more sophisticated touch. The tone has also changed from what we saw in The Lightning Thief. The tone of the books are so unique and fine tuned in the way they balance action, emotion, and humor. Thankfully, I feel Thor Freudenthal has captured this wonderfully. The action is there, the humor is there; it all ties together nicely. The only drawback to this movie that I see is that we have to wait until August to see it!
Rebecca: The tone of the trailer is awesome! I’m already a fan of the music. There is so much that feels right about it. Showing Luke’s pity, Hermes’ quote, Thalia dying and turning into a tree… If this is what they’re showing on the trailer, just think what will be in the movie! It really brings a sense of adventure which is what Sea of Monsters is all about.
