Here is a new story by Neiges with the perfect theme for Halloween!
Fall was coming. It was his favorite time of year. It let summer melt away, and winter’s snow fall. But today was the first day of school. September first.
Now, normally for a son of Hades, I would have obeyed the rules. I would have listened.
Not in school.
In the underworld.
Hi. I’m Ken Nelson. I’m ten, and go to Benson elementary.
Hi. I’m also Rubie Grant. I was ten and went to Meyers Boarding School.
Yeah, I said ‘was’ and ‘went’.
I’m dead. Well, not exactly.Ken Nelson is alive. He’s-sorry-I’m him and he’s me. See, I’m Rubie, and when I died because somebody looked at me–yes, LOOKED–when I went to dinner. The lady at the counter looked weird. Her image flickered, sometimes old lady, sometimes a black and white faced monstrous human wearing a gold dress. And by black, I don’t mean African-American. I mean pitch black with a piercing red eye. The white side looked like cracked plaster. She didn’t appear to have a noise, and her lips looked dry but not chapped. It looked like someone had cut it with a knife–someone who wasn’t good with a knife. She looked at me, and I fell over. I felt my soul drifting up, up, up… and the next thing I knew I was in a lobby. I saw the lettering above the desk. It was in Greek. I knew enough about the Greek alphabet to decipher the letters. Delta Omicron Alpha. DOA. Dead On Arrival.
I was dead.
