Lerman: ‘Jackson, Potter very different’

Harry Potter VS Percy Jackson Fight PosterThis article was posted on Digital Spy today. Enjoy!

Percy Jackson And The Lightning Thief star Logan Lerman has spoken out about comparisons between his movie and the Harry Potter franchise.

The action fantasy revolves around a boy (Lerman) who discovers that he is half-human and half-god, and sets out on a quest with two friends to rescue his mother from the Underworld.

Speaking to BlackBook, he said: “I think a lot of people are saying that mainly because Chris Columbus’s name is attached to both films and we are selling it as, ‘From the director of Harry Potter‘.

“However, they’re different movies. Do we want it to be as successful and as loved [as] the Harry Potter films? Of course, but they’re pretty different stories.”

He added: “This movie is transferring Greek mythology into the modern day. It’s paralleling classic myths and introducing a new demi-god into the modern day world.”

Lerman, 18, previously said that his character had little in common with wizard Harry Potter “except that he’s an unlikely hero who’s been thrown into a huge situation”.

Percy Jackson vs Harry Potter: Round 3

Harry Potter VS Percy Jackson Fight PosterIn the last post of this series we saw that Percy Jackson had the cooler weapon over Harry Potter. Today we will look at who has the better powers.

Magic and Powers

Percy Jackson has a fixed amount of powers that he can do. He can just be creative and explore his limits with water. Also water is the only thing that he can use his powers with and draw power from.

Harry Potter can learn how to do about anything other than trying to raise the dead. However the only fallback is that he needs to have a wand to channel his powers (it is possible to do magic without a wand but it is unfocused). A powerful wizard can do magic without speaking but most need to be able to speak to use magic.

Eragon Shadeslayer has powers that are based from the ancient language. His magical powers are limited to both his vocabulary in the ancient language and his strength. Magic consumes energy so that if you try to do something like lift a mountain it will consume your strength and kill you. This is my favorite magic because of the limitations on the magician.

If the three fought using only their magic and Percy was standing in water, especially ocean water I believe that it would be pretty much a tie between the three. Only creative magic would ultimately win.

Percy Jackson vs Harry Potter: Round 2

Harry Potter VS Percy Jackson Fight Poster

In the first post of the series Percy Jackson vs Harry Potter we saw that Harry Potter would most likely beat Percy Jackson in a one-on-one physical fight between the two. Mostly owning to Percy downfall? Riptide, which cannot harm mortals.

However, that is not really what this series is about. This series will focus on the similarities and differences of the the two books into movies.

Today, who has the cooler weapon?  A wand vs a sword.

The cooler weapon

Harry’s wand is a piece of holly with a feather of a phoenix (fawkes to be exact) created by Mr. Ollivander that channels Harry’s unfocused magic energy. But what of Riptide, Percy Jackson’s sword? Riptide has a mythological history…

Riptide was formerly owned and used by the demigod, Hercules. The sword originated as Zoë Nightshade’s hairclip, which she gave to Hercules to help him defeat the monster Ladon and is said to have the ocean as its source of power, which would explain why it works well for Percy. Riptide is made of celestial bronze which destroys monsters but cannot harm mortals. You can read more about Riptide here.

The two best features of riptide are its ability to always come back to the owner and secondly when sheathed it becomes a pen. Pretty useful to have a full sword in your pocket or for the geeks, in your pocket protector made of kevlar just in case you click it (movie edition of riptide)!

This one is an easy round to judge…the round goes to Percy Jackson and Riptide! Do you think that Percy should win? Leave your comments below.

Is Percy Jackson the next Harry Potter?

Is Percy Jackson the next Harry Potter?

Percy Jackson and Harry Potter have the same type of themes. Same type of characters. Percy and Harry are the heroes that grew up not knowing what they really were. They both attend places mostly unknown to humans. They both are important people. Annabeth and Hermione are the brains of the trio. Grover and Ron are the best friends and are always making jokes. They all have crazy adventures and at school/camp they go back to the regular world.

The people in all the Harry Potter movies were casted pretty well. The trio all look like their book characters. Unfortunately, the trio in Percy Jackson does not. They are not the correct age. Annabeth and Grover do not look like their book characters.

The Harry Potter movies do okay to sticking to the storyline. In the Sorcerer’s Stone it stays along the line, but no movie (that I know of) could get as close to the books as Twilight. Already Percy Jackson looks to have strayed with changing Annabeth and Grover. Also Riptide appears to be a click pen on the trailer rather than one with a cap. The opening scene in this trailer never happens in the book. I hope they cut it out of the movie as I don’t like them giving you that hint as to who is father is. Medusa is supposed to be an old grandma and on the trailer Medusa (Uma Thurman) doesn’t at all look old. In the scene shown with Medusa Percy is holding a PHONE! Demigods don’t use phones as they are like beacons. As it is an iPhone, let’s hope it’s just Grover’s cell phone. I’m glad Chris Columbus is directing as he did keep the two Harry Potter movies close to the books.

I’m really hoping The Lightening Thief will be a great movie even if it isn’t close to the books.
