Digital Domain: Special Effects

You learned in the article, Special Effects of Percy Jackson: Digital Domain, who did the main special effects for Percy Jackson. Percy Jackson Movies staff contacted Digital Domain to find out exactly what they did on the movie. Tim Enstice, Public Relations Project Manager for Digital Domain has this to say about what they did for the movie:

In addition to small touches such as the “sneaker wings” and the lightning bolt effects, the main areas of the film created here at Digital Domain include:

* The Hydra sequence, where Percy & friends battle a five-headed fire-breathing monster that turns into a ten-headed fire-breathing monster.

* The Fury sequence, where Percy’s teacher transforms into a winged creature.

* The climactic battle atop the Empire State Building as well as the ensuing chase throughout the night skies of NYC, ending on a rooftop where Percy commands water to defeat Luke.

What they did: CG characters, vehicles, 2D and 3D enviroments, natural phenomenon, Matte painting (set extension, cg lighting/relections), CG water/liquid, CG actors, compositing (adding CG to film)

This is great that such a large experienced special effects company did the special effects. This makes me much more excited for the special effects, since that is a pretty huge part of Percy Jackson. Avatar’s visual effects were awesome (my favorite part of the movie, especially the computer screen graphics) and Star Trek’s graphics were some of the best I have ever seen. Then you have the Curious Case of Benjamin Button that won an Oscar for Best Achievement in Visual Effects and Digital domain did the special effects. Below is a full list of all the movies that they have worked on.
